Tiger Shark Conservation Status
Conservation status (Tiger Shark) – Near threatened
According to the IUCN list the tiger sharks current status is “near threatened”. This means that although not immediately threatened by extinction there is a risk that it pretty quick will become so. Therefore it is very important that the tiger shark population is closely followed and recorded so that scientists can estimate the future of the tiger shark and start up support programs accordingly.
Conservation status (Tiger Shark) – Tourist safety
One of the reasons to why the tiger shark has become a slightly endangered species might seem quite odd, but truth is many tiger sharks have been killed in order to secure the safety of tourists in the tropical and sub-tropical areas. Because of the tiger sharks quite curious feeding behaviour, attacking anything that gets too close, the threat is serious towards the tourist industry. But maybe killing off as many tiger sharks as possible is not the best solution.
Conservation status (Tiger Shark) – Fishing industry
Although the tiger shark is not commercially fished in any larger scale, the small scale fishing is quite a problem. Not only is the tiger shark an excellent source of food but its liver is also plays a major part in producing natural vitamin A oil. The tiger sharks skin is also a highly valuable product due to its magnificent patterns and it is very common that tiger sharks end up as handbags or shoes, a not very fitting end for such an awesome predator as the tiger shark.
