Tiger Shark Habitat

As most other sharks the tiger shark migrate from place to place following both the warmer currents and its preys. Being a mean killing machine and a predator the tiger shark is guilty of killing more humans than any other shark except the great white. Unfortunately for the shark humans does not taste very good and therefore most killings never even results in a full stomach for the tiger shark.

Tiger Shark habitat – Outshore

Many adult tiger sharks spend their time just outside the reefs at a depth of around 500 feet. There it will be able to find a lot of the prey the tiger shark is looking for but problem is that in such areas the temperature can change pretty quickly and the tiger shark will need to move around a lot to find a new warm a cosy spot to stay in. Although the tiger shark has been recorded to go as deep as 1085 feet they are far more common to be found in shallower waters.

Tiger Shark habitat – Inshore

Although many tiger sharks spend their days out on the reefs the most of them come inshore to eat. Especially around the coastal areas where fresh water runoff occurs is there an abundant of food for the tiger shark. They tend to prefer the warmer waters close to shore, especially at night, and is even known to enter bays and rivers in pursuit of prey. So although tiger sharks tend to move around a lot they are most commonly found close to shores and have so become the terror of surfers all over the tropical world.

Tiger Shark habitat – Food

The tiger shark is known to try to eat more or less anything which explains the many human attacks. Caught and gutted tiger sharks has revealed such items as number plates and chewed car tires, a fact that says a lot about how picky the tiger sharks really are when it comes to food. Main source of food is fish, seals, birds, smaller sharks, squid and turtles though and in other words on might say that the tiger shark will eat whatever it can find floating around in the ocean.
